Offerings From The Sea

limited edtion

Children's laughter bounces off of snow banks. Wet clumps, remnants of a snowball fight, cling to your mittens. Your cheeks are red from the cold air, and you can see your breath. Your ears and head are warm, swaddled in the softest and densest fur on earth. A snowflake tenderly lands on your sea otter fur headband. You smile and imagine your family gathered around the hot chocolate you are about to make. Soft glowing light from your home spreads out amongst the dark sky, speckled with stars.

Care instructions sea otter is incredibly durable. It's okay if it gets wet, just slowly dry it out. Fur should be stored in a cool, dry, place with air flow -not in a plastic bag. If fur gets too dried out by heat or lack of air, it may crack. For professional cleaning, take fur to a furrier. Due to international regulations sea otter handicrafts cannot be exported out of the United States without a CITES permit and some countries do not allow the import of sea otter handicrafts. Contact U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for more information on sea otter handicraft export/import regulations.

Sustainable Fur The designer sources fur by asking the animal for its life before hunting and skinning it with his own hands. Ancient rituals, such as smudging with Labrador Tea and giving the animal its last drink of water in prayer, honor the animal. Shaman Furs upholds Yup'ik Eskimo tradition of a spiritual and respectful relationship with seals that has been celebrated for thousands of years. This incredibly personal connection is carried throughout its journey to you. Shaman Furs' unique business ethics and standards of quality have created a story and relationship not found in typical fashion houses. Sea otter fur is historically prized as one of the rarest furs in the world. In 1968, Neiman-Marcus purchased four pelts at $2,300 apiece. After a history of foreign exploitation, Alaska Native tribal groups now have exclusive rights to hunt and work with the fur. Because of traditional Native hunting practices and conservation efforts, Alaska sea otter is no longer listed as an endangered species. The luxuriously warm, soft and durable fur contains up to one million hairs per square inch, making it the densest in the World. Shaman Furs is the first label to bring sea otter fur back into American high fashion since the 1970's.
